Guest: Amir Khawaja — I run engineering across the full span — deciding what to build, architecting and writing it, keeping it alive in production under regulatory supervision, and leading the organizations that do all three. Across three decades that's included payments, financial services, and e-commerce. Most recently I've led site reliability engineering for two global card networks — several hundred people at peak, employees and contract partners — holding the real-time authorization path at five-nines (99.999%) availability through a major acquisition. Before that I led technical product management for Visa's Americas portfolio, and architected the personalization and recommendation platforms behind $115M in annual incremental revenue at Dell. I came to the U.S. at sixteen with aspirations to study medicine. Software turned out to be the more interesting problem, and at nineteen I founded my first company to pay for college and support my family. It changed how I approach risk, from avoiding it to managing it. I've written the code, not just led the people who write it. I wrote the JavaScript module that drove real-time product recommendations on Dell.com, and later the entire codebase — backend and frontend — of a first-party identity company I co-founded and patented, on nights and weekends while holding a full-time role. That venture didn't work: the browsers closed the market before we found customers, and we shut it down rather than chase it. I'd have spent less time building and more time getting clear on who the customer was. I taught software development at the college level for thirteen years, and I'm still a teacher at heart. I lead by putting people ahead of my own visibility — a bet that trust compounds faster than self-promotion. I've mentored engineers into Distinguished Engineer roles and Sr. Managers into Directors. Composure isn't something I was born with; it's built through repetition, in the dojo as much as anywhere. I'm a third-degree black belt in Taekwondo and co-host of Black Belts and Boardrooms.
